October Wave Fest 12/10/17

October Wave Fest 12/10/17

by Alastair Mackenzie
October is traditionally the best season for mountain wave in the UK. Thursday's wave conditions were perfect for anyone wanting to try out wave flying for the first time. Wide open gaps, static waves and warm temperatures aloft made for a very pleasant ride. Wave was contacted at 4000ft just off the eastern end of Church Fenton's E/W runway with no nasty rotor on the tow. Initial rate of climb was 5kt taking the glider from 4300ft to 6000ft in a matter of minutes. After that the wave deminished in strength topping out around 8000ft in that location. A series of 3 wave gap jumps loosing about 1000ft each time took me out close to the edge of Leeds Bradford's Class D airspace just north of Harewood House 18nm NW of Burn. As the sun started to set it was time to return to Burn above cloud leaving Harewood at 6700ft and arriving back at Burn at 5500ft cruising along the lift lines. Not the highest wave flight ever but one that will be remembered for some time to come. If you've never been up in the wave before, ask an instructor to take you up next time it waves - you won't regret spending the cash on the aerotow....
