November Wave Fest - Its waving every day...
by Alastair Mackenzie
Winter is here and so is the wave. Why not make the most of it ? Dont just stand around for hours waiting for a 5 minute winch launch circuit. Rig your glider, wrap up warm and go and have some fun in the wave!
Not sure when its waving - here are some clues...
Classic lenticulars - obvious wave.
Cumulous that form in lines across the wind - pretty obvious its wave.
Cumulous that appear to form in streets but dont actually blow away downwind - its wave.
If the met office forecast mentions MTW that stands for Mountain Wave.
If the wind strength is forecast to increase with height thats also good news for wave.
So where do I need to tow and how high ?
In a moderate SW wind upper wind will be westerly - tow to at least 4500ft just west of Sherburn / Church Fenton or overhead Riccall.
In a moderate NW wind - tow to at least 4500ft overhead Church Fenton or even WBS.
In a moderate Northerly wind - tow to 4500ft overhead Acaster Malbis.
